Today was the furthest I've ever ridden.
There are a few reasons for this.
The first one being the famous Prairie winds that blow from West to East. I guess they would be the infamous winds if you were traveling to the West. I did have to ride into the wind twice, just to get myself turned around after visiting a Tourist Info Centre, and I would not want to ride like that all day.
Another reason for my first Century (100 miles) is that there is nowhere to stay. Campgrounds or motels. The Tourist Info people suggested I camp at the rest stop near Piapot where there were outhouses and a picnic table but no running water. No thanks. I could of ridden the 10 km to Maple Creek but that would of made a short day and anyway who wants to ride an extra 20 km. off course?
And I just had the energy today to ride that far. I guess a good nights sleep does help.
I am looking forward to getting off Hwy 1. After riding through Medicine Hat this morning it reminded me why. Not only are there lots of on and off ramps but it is harder to find places, like a grocery store, than in a small town. But Medicine Hat does have the world's tallest teepee.
I am now in Saskatchewan. My third province. Tomorrow I will be riding towards Swift Current and then south on Hwy 4 where I will connect with Hwy 13 which eventually will connect with Hwy 2 in Manitoba. I've found out that these highways are okay for travel and there are no problems with flooding as there was last month.
